Mark’s Easy Homemade Gourmet Pizza

Mark’s Easy Homemade Gourmet Pizza

“I do love my pizza. To be perfectly honest, I’m a pizza snob and have always been searching for the perfect pie. One of my favorite recipes happens to be the ones that you whip up when there’s nothing in the house. One night I had a jar of garlic in the pantry and I used this sauce for the base of one of the best pizzas I’ve ever made.” —Mark Bove

½ cup Bove’s Sweet Basil Pizza Sauce

1 medium onion, chopped

2-3 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil

A Ball of Fresh Dough

1 tsp. dried oregano leaves

1 – 1 ½ cups grated mozzarella cheese

6 medium mushrooms, washed and sliced

1 finely chopped clove of fresh garlic (optional)

½ lb. hot or mild Italian sausage

¼ cup freshly chopped basil

3 Tbs. grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat: Preheat oven to 375°.

Cook: In a heavy skillet, heat 2 Tbs olive oil. Add chopped onions and garlic, cook until onions are caramelized. Set aside in a small dish. Add sausage to skillet, browning, and chopping into small pieces (as you would with hamburger). Pour off oil and drippings, set aside.

Prep: Lightly brush pizza shell with olive oil, then spread Bove’s Sweet Red Pepper Pizza Sauce evenly over the shell. Sprinkle grated mozzarella evenly over sauce, then add cooked sausage, onions, and sliced mushrooms, also arranging evenly. Sprinkle pizza with fresh chopped basil and Parmesan cheese. You can also use whole basil leaves instead of chopped if preferred.

Bake: Bake directly on oven rack for 15-20 minutes until brown and bubbly.
